Giving to the Needy | Matthew 6: 1-4

Beware of practicing your righteousness before others in order to be seen by them, for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven.

So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be done in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Jesus shares with us the importance of giving to the needy. If we have the resources, we can give to others to help them thrive and grow alongside us. This verse encourages us to be generous selflessly and truly think within ourselves why we’re doing what we’re doing. Jesus encourages us to use our generosity as acts of service out of the goodness of your heart and nothing more. You do not need attention and praise to show up.

Maybe this verse is not just about giving money, but about giving your time. Not taking our relationships for granted and showing up for others without needing something in return. He is telling us that we do not need to prove our faithfulness, as our belief in God is enough. As we reflect through Lent, think about your relationship with yourself, with others, and with God. Are you looking to be rewarded? Or are you motivated by your love for God?

Prayer: Gracious God, thank you for the opportunity to provide and support others. Strengthen our hearts to grow with you. Amen.
